The Ventroom: A Satirical Web Project Reflecting on Modern Dating

Exploring the Frustrations and Concerns of Online Dating Among Millennial Adults

This web project, known as The Ventroom, is a unique and interactive landing page designed by Stella Chenjie Guan. Inspired by her own experiences with modern dating, Guan created this project as part of a larger initiative to write a book about millennial adult life. The Ventroom aims to gather user feedback and data on the frustrations, debates, and concerns surrounding online dating among millennial adults.

The Ventroom takes a satirical approach to examine the frustrations of modern dating. It serves as a platform to inspire deeper reflections on the dating culture we face today and spark discussions around important topics such as the shopping cart mentality, ghosting, and online sexual harassment. The webpage is fully interactive, allowing users to scroll through carousel sliders, submit their own opinions, and vote on various aspects of online dating.

Designed as a simplified journey, The Ventroom guides users through the modern online dating process. From downloading apps to scrolling through profiles and eventually messaging back and forth with matches, the webpage provides a visually engaging experience. Each section of the webpage offers unique interactive elements that encourage user participation and contribution.

The Ventroom is designed as a responsive website, ensuring that it scales proportionately according to browser size and device types. This allows users to access and engage with the project seamlessly across different platforms.

Stella Chenjie Guan, the creative director and designer behind The Ventroom, collaborated with web developer Gleb Bero and Narek Sahakyan to bring this project to life. Their combined efforts resulted in a visually appealing and user-friendly web page that captures the essence of modern dating.

The Ventroom's interactive features allow users to actively engage with the content. In the first section, a carousel slider presents satirical versions of popular dating apps. Users can vote on their likes and dislikes, and the data is displayed in percentages. The second section showcases illustrated dating profiles that "flip" to reveal brief descriptions when hovered or clicked. Users can submit their own opinions and contribute to the ongoing conversation. The third section presents real messages filtered into categories, allowing users to submit their own messages received from dating apps.

The Ventroom project began in late 2017 during the ideation phase. The initial concept was developed in January 2018, followed by preliminary design work in February. The final design was completed in March, and web development began in the same month, with an expected completion date in April 2018.

This web project serves as a research tool to gather public opinions and user anecdotes about modern online dating. By allowing users to vote and submit their own opinions, The Ventroom provides valuable insights into the complexities of millennial adult life and the challenges faced in the world of online dating.

The Ventroom was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Website and Web Design category in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Ventroom stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
